Sources and Benefits of Resveratrol
Many food and beverages already contain resveratrol, however, only in small amounts. In nature, resveratrol occurs in small amounts in peanuts, blueberries, mulberries, grapes and a few wild growing weeds and plants. Resveratrol helps these plants protect themselves from their natural “enemies” such as certain fungi and prevent damage caused by sunlight and other stress factors.
The health benefits of resveratrol, and products with resVida® by DSM Nutritional Products, may promote healthy aging and longevity. *
- Resveratrol may protect the cardiovascular system *
- Resveratrol may maintain neurocognitive function *
- Resveratrol may improve balance, sensory-motor coordination and endurance *
Natural sources of resveratrol often do not deliver this antioxidant at a high enough level in order to receive the desired health benefits.
- Whole Grape, Grape Skin / Seed. The highest concentrations of resveratrol are found in whole grapes and grape skins that are used to make wine. Wine, especially red wine, is the best source for a daily dose of resveratrol. Its concentration varies greatly according to the grape variety and cultivation and fermentation processes. Red wine contains higher concentrations of resveratrol than white because red wine is fermented together with the skins, whereas the skins are removed from white wine grape varieties prior to fermentation. resVida® provides convenient and safe access to the benefits of red wine.
- Even though resveratrol in red wine is a powerful antioxidant, this natural source does not contain enough resveratrol to be efficient enough to protect humans. For example, red wine of the pinot noir variety contains only 3.1 mg of resveratrol per liter and based on existing studies in animals as a guideline, the minimum levels of resveratrol needed to be effective are thought to be 30 mg per person per day – an amount of resveratrol contained in almost 10 bottles of red wine.
- Giant Knotweed. Most other resveratrol forms available are extracted from the roots and stalks of the giant knotweed plant (polygonum cuspidatum) in China. Resveratrol from this source is not supported by science and the production process of suppliers often does not meet safety, health and environmental standards. Knotweed is a wild plant which is not part of a normal diet.
- Nature Identical. resVida® by DSM Nutritional Products. resVida® is 99% pure trans-resveratrol and has comprehensive safety data. In contrast to some other resveratrol dietary and food ingredients in the market, resVida® has a long-term, dedicated human research program – one of the reasons why leading universities around the world and United States government institutions use resVida® in their clinical research studies.
